Our kids have inherited a love of singing from me. Unfortunately, like me, they won’t be winning The Voice any time soon.
Not that it really matters. Singing is something the kids have always enjoyed. Many a car journey has sped by with them singing along to everything from Taylor Swift to The Greatest Showman.
It’s not hard to see who they’ve inherited this from. Regular readers will know that I have a penchant for writing and performing parody songs (27 and counting so far). And one of the scariest (and yet most fun) things I have ever done was to get up on stage and sing my version of Pretty in Pink in front of the entire audience at BritMums’ BML16 conference. I can occasionally hold a tune but I’m no singer by any stretch of the imagination. That doesn’t stop me from enjoying it, though.
Anyhow, we recently bought the kids a singing game for the Xbox: Now That’s What I Call Really Bad Karaoke 97, something like that. Unsurprisingly all three of them leapt straight in with gusto. While not entirely tuneless, it did leave me pondering the cost of soundproofing the playroom. Or, at the very least, investing in industrial earplugs.
Kara in particular is fond of a solo warble. She’s certainly a natural, confident performer; unlike me, the girl has stage presence. Unfortunately, like me she doesn’t have much of a voice. As far as singing goes she’s less Katy Perry and more Katie Hopkins.
It seems a love of singing that outweighs any actual talent very much runs in the family. Which brings me, in one of those bone-jarring narrative swerves, to this track by 1980s pop band Level 42, quite possibly the only musicians of note to come from the Isle of Wight. Running in the Family came on the radio in the car the other day. It must have been the first time I’d heard it in the best part of 30 years. Of course, you won’t be surprised to hear that I had to sing along to it – because that’s just what I (and my kids) do.
