Doctor Who Christmas special: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe review

Six years after David Tennant saw off the Sycorax in his pyjamas in the first Doctor Who Christmas special, the show has become as much a fixture of BBC1’s festive schedule as the Queen’s Speech. And this second seasonal special from the pen of show-runner Steven Moffat was a perfect metaphor for Christmas Day itself: a flurry of excitement at the beginning, a bit bloated around the middle, but ultimately satisfying in the end as it reinforced the value of family and close friendships.

Treme season 2 review

The second season of David Simon (creator of The Wire) and Eric Overmyer‘s series centred on post-Katrina New Orleans concluded its UK run on Sky Atlantic on Friday night. The extended finale continued its underlying themes of renewal and recovery as the city and its citizens continue their struggle to restore normality more than a year after the devastating hurricane.

Doctor Who: Season 6 review

*** WARNING: SPOILERS (naturally) ***

Five months after watching the Doctor killed by a space-suited assailant at Lake Silencio on the Plain of Sighs, we finally learned how the Time Lord cheated his destiny. The Wedding of River Song answered all (well, most) of our questions, set up new ones for next year and also managed to reset the series to move the Doctor away from being a feared God-like Time Lord Victorious, perhaps moving back to being the quiet adventurer he was in the Hartnell era.
