You’ll never guess which Dr Seuss book Kara has been reading this week …
There are some days when I can rack my brains for ages trying to come up with an apt post title – and then still fail. (A newspaper headline writer I am not.)
And then some days the perfect title appears fully formed in my head. (Accompanied by the sound of a ‘ta-da’ fanfare, of course. It’s not just me who does that, right?)
We call Kara ‘The Cat’ in our house, for obvious reasons. Her favourite onesie is a cat outfit. She walks around the house purring and meowing. Her headphones have cat ears. She has a habit of substituting cat-related words into the lyrics of her favourite songs. Her favourite TV programme is Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir, one of whose lead characters is – you guessed it – a cat-themed superhero.
When Heather was clearing out some of our cupboards this week, she found my old American football helmet from my university playing days. (I calculated that I last wore it 27 years ago – I’m so old.) Of course, Kara had to try it on. Hence ‘the cat in the hat’.
I guess I can be thankful she didn’t fully adopt the role, tackle me to the ground and then stand over me, gloating and trash-talking. Lucky me.
I’m not sure what I love more about Kara. There’s her adventurous spirit: she will try anything without fear. And there’s her love of reading: she’s probably the best reader of our three at her age. Of course, it’s not an either/or choice. I love both these facets of her. Although maybe we’ll encourage her to try a different type of hat next time …
