A musical parody for the CBeebies generation

With the possible exception of Go Jetters, it appears our children have finally graduated from CBeebies to older channels such as CBBC.

To mark the end of a televisual era in our household, I thought it would be fitting to pay tribute to that dearest of friends and babysitters, which for 13 hours a day for the best part of ten years has seen us through many a too-early morning or allowed us to get dinner on.

So, of course, I’ve written a musical parody.

CBeebies has only been running for 15 years, which makes it less than half the age of the song I’ve chosen to rework in its honour. A-ha’s The Sun Always Shines on TV was the Norwegian boy band’s only UK number one. You may remember the video featured the group performing in a Gothic church in front of an audience of bare mannequins. No, I don’t know why either. But it was directed by Steve Barron, who was also responsible for iconic 80s videos such as Take On Me, Billie Jean, Money for Nothing and Don’t You Want Me, so who am I to argue?

More than three decades later, a-ha are still going strong, filming an MTV Unplugged special over the summer, with a European acoustic tour to follow. The Unplugged set has several notable highlights, not least a haunting ballad version of Take On Me. But I’ve always had a soft spot for The Sun Always Shines on TV, so here goes.

So, to Justin, Andy, Maddie, Rebecca, Sid, Cerrie, Pui, Katy and all the other CBeebies presenters over the years, this one’s for you.

You Can’t Have Too Much CBeebies (to the tune of The Sun Always Shines on TV)

I want to watch Teletubbies
Numtums, Night Garden
Go Jetters, Octonauts and Postman Pat
On our TV every day
I fear the tears and tantrums
If I even try to change channels

Justin Fletcher, baby
Believe me, you can’t have too much CBeebies
Nina and the Neurons
Andy, Rebecca and Maddie

Please don’t ask me to replay
That episode of Waybuloo
It’s driving me out of my mind
Your mummy wants to watch it for
Tom Hardy on Bedtime Stories
It seems to keep her happy

Justin Fletcher, baby
Believe me, you can’t have too much CBeebies
Nina and the Neurons
Andy, Rebecca and Maddie

Nina and the Neurons
Andy, Rebecca and Maddie
Maddie

And here is the video of a-ha performing the original acoustic track alongside Ingrid Helene Håvik on MTV Unplugged earlier this year.
