My Sunday Photo: Not your usual back to school photo

Like millions of others, our kids went back to school this week.

We’re well practised at the first day of school now, with even-numbered years – 2012, 2014 and 2016 – being Isaac, Toby and Kara’s first tentative steps through the school gates. 2017 marks their entries into Years 5, 3 and 1 respectively.

Every September we faithfully capture pictures of the kids on their first morning of the new term. Each year the shot is somewhat formulaic and yet unique in its own way, capturing a particular mood or moment in time. My favourite remains this one from 2015.

First day back at school

This year’s photo runs it close. It is becoming increasingly difficult to persuade all three children to pose obediently for the camera – as a blogger’s kids, you would think they’d be used to it by now! – but Heather managed to capture this shot of them dabbing.

All three of them were still tired from our big 2½ week holiday – they had only had two days in between to recover. But they all seemed happy enough when I quizzed them that evening about how their days had gone. No matter how many times you have been through the cycle, it’s always a relief to have an incident-free first day.

And so another school year begins. Every one is different in some way. I wonder what this year will bring.
