It all started out with my parenting parody version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody – if you’re going to make an idiot of yourself you might as well go big, I say. From there it has progressed via old school classics such as ABBA’s Money Money Money and Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall to more modern hits by Adele, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. En route I’ve murdered Christmas staples by The Pogues and East 17 and recorded Valentine’s Day and Halloween versions of Don’t You (Forget About Me) and Beautiful. I’ve paid my respects to the passing of David Bowie and Prince with (barely recognisable) covers of Life on Mars and When Doves Cry. Even Smells Like Teen Spirit has not been immune from being turned into a wry parenting parody.
I even got to perform one of my parodies at the blogging conference BML last June – a version of the Psychedelic Furs’ Pretty in Pink that was an ode to gender stereotypes and Isaac’s former love of all things pink. I remain the only person in BritMums history brave/stupid enough to sing a blogger’s keynote. Write that on my tombstone!
Anyhow, for my latest effort I’ve just had to go for a track that features in the animated film Sing: Elton John’s I’m Still Standing. It’s a firm favourite of all three of our kids and is frequently sung by us all when driving around town. (With the windows up, it must be said.)
How many of my previous parodies referred to in the revised lyrics have you heard before? And if you’ve missed any of them, now’s your chance to rectify that oversight.
Oh, and finally, take a look at the header image for this post, which is a still from the original song’s video. Do you recognise the dancer in the skimpy black outfit walking next to Elton? No? That’s Strictly‘s very own Bruno Tonioli circa 1983. Fact.
