I’m a BiB Awards finalist! Er, now what?

The world is full of surprises. Leciester City winning the Premier League title. The Giants defeating the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII to deny them a perfect 19-0 season. Katie Hopkins saying something nice. (I’m still waiting for that one.) Now I’m not going to be disingenuous and say that me being named as one of the finalists for the BritMums Readers’ Choice award is anywhere near as big a shock. But I was rather taken aback when one of my fellow finalists (thanks Prabs) tipped me the wink this afternoon.

My response? To quote from Blackadder:

I think the phrase rhymes with ‘clucking bell’.

At this point it would be very British of me to say I’m delighted to have made it this far and I’m just happy to be here. That’s all true, of course, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t bothered about winning. I would dearly love to win. My world isn’t going to end if (when) I don’t, not least because the level of competition is immense and a number of my rivals are also good friends. But as a blogger with a small readership and no background as a professional writer, it would mean a lot to me to be recognised in such esteemed company.

Anyhow, I’m one of eight finalists for Readers’ Choice, a category intended for blogs that don’t neatly fit into a specific genre. And that’s me down to a ‘T’. I do write primarily about parenting but I also write and perform musical parodies. And I host the Meet the Parents podcast along with a team of both mum and dad bloggers.

I’m nothing if not versatile. I’m equally bad at everything!

Anyhow, I’m not really one for making subtle requests. To borrow once again from Blackadder:

Baldrick, you wouldn’t recognise a subtle plan if it painted itself purple and danced naked on a harpsichord singing “subtle plans are here again”.

So, to cut to the chase: if you’re feeling that way inclined, I would love you to vote for me. And if you’re not, feel free to vote for any of the other Readers’ Choice finalists – they’re all fab:

Absolutely Prabulous

Catherine’s Cultural Wednesdays

Coombe Mill

Ekaterina’s Greek Expectations

Life, Love and Dirty Dishes

The Mum Project

Whinge Whinge Wine

Cast your vote via this form. Polls close on Sunday 2nd July at 23:45 and the winners of all categories will be announced at BritMums’ BML17 on Saturday 30th September. So now it’s over to you.

If you didn’t see it before, I recorded a new version of Shawn Mendes’ Stitches to convince people why I should be considered for this award. Although I fear my off-key singing may have achieved the exact opposite. Anyhow, here you go. Feel free to sing along.

Support (to the tune of Stitches)

I know I’ve failed to win before
But yet again I’m coming back for more
Last year I made the final ten
Of the Readers’ Choice Award, I’m back again

Got a feeling that I’m swimming upstream
But I think that it’s worth another try
If I quit I’m sure I’ll regret it
What if …?

You heard me singing Pretty in Pink
Live on stage with my own lyrics
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?
Readers’ Choice, vote for me
Help me in my quest for victory
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?

I blog, I podcast and I sing
Thoughts on Brexit and tips on this blogging thing
Write birthday letters to the kids
My parody songs done at home
I make them all up on my own

Got a feeling that I’m swimming upstream
But I think that it’s worth another try
If I quit I’m sure I’ll regret it
What if …?

You heard me singing Pretty in Pink
Live on stage with my own lyrics
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?
Readers’ Choice, vote for me
Help me in my quest for victory
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?

This is all I ask
Moment’s glory in which to bask
This is all I ask
A momentous task

This is all I ask
Moment’s glory in which to bask
This is all I ask
A momentous task

This is all I ask
Moment’s glory in which to bask
This is all I ask
A momentous task

This is all I ask
Moment’s glory in which to bask
Glory in which to bask

You heard me singing Pretty in Pink
Live on stage with my own lyrics
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?
Readers’ Choice, vote for me
Help me in my quest for victory
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?

Give me a second thought
Can I have your support?

Give me a second thought
Can I have your support?
