A BiB Awards 2017 parody song: Can I count on your support?

Like a punch-drunk boxer, I never know when I’m beaten and should just stay down on the canvas. So here I am again asking you to consider voting for me in this year’s BritMums Brilliance in Blogging Awards – the BiBs.

It’s that time of year when a blogger’s thoughts turn hopes of being nominated by their peers and readers for one of the BiBs that will be presented at BML17 in September. There are 11 categories in all, ranging from Family & Lifestyle, Food and Fresh Voice (for blogs less than 18 months old) to the one I would like to be considered in, Readers’ Choice:

Sometimes there are blogs that don’t fit into any one category but we simply adore them. [The] Readers’ Choice category [is] perfect for those blogs that are among our favourites but defy categorisation.

And that’s me down to a ‘T’. I’m nothing if not varied in my content. Yes, Slouching towards Thatcham is primarily a parenting blog and I’m particularly proud of posts such as The last girl I will ever fall in love with, a love letter of sorts to my daughter Kara. But I’m also not afraid to tackle big issues such as Brexit, which I did in a series of posts starting with Will the EU referendum leave a broken United Kingdom for our children?, or handling the aftermath of a family bereavement in Talking to a child after a death in the family. I even offer practical tips on blogging and social networks – I’m a social media manager for a large global company in my day job – such as my blogger’s guide to LinkedIn.

It’s not all serious, of course. Many of my posts have a nostalgic or musical bent to them, including my parody series of famous songs that I have rewritten with parenting-based lyrics and sung (occasionally in tune, but mostly not) for listeners’ amusement bemusement – you can check out my back catalogue via the links at the bottom of this post. I remain the only person in BML history to be asked to do a bloggers’ keynote and have sung their piece (my version of the Psychedelic Furs’ Pretty in Pink). Live. In front of 500 people. Gulp.

And, of course, I am also the host of the Meet the Parents podcast which recently racked up its 50th episode and, as far as I am aware, remains the UK’s only regular parenting podcast with a mixed team of both mums and dads.

Jack of all trades, me.

So if you’ve enjoyed any of my content over the past year, I would be delighted if you nominated me in the Readers’ Choice category. I was shortlisted in the final ten for this award last year but didn’t make the final five. I’d be over the moon to be one of the eight finalists this year.

Go ahead, make my day. If it helps, I promise I won’t sing in public again if I win. That’s got to be worth some serious thought, right?

You can vote in any or all of the 11 categories via this link. Whether you nominate me or anyone else, if you enjoy reading blogs do please show your support for your favourites by taking a few minutes to vote for them.

Nominations close at 11:59pm on Wednesday 7th June.

Anyhow, to convince you of my credentials, I’ve recorded a new version of Shawn Mendes’ irritatingly catchy Stitches, referencing much of what I have mentioned above along the way. Enjoy.

Support (to the tune of Stitches)

I know I’ve failed to win before
But yet again I’m coming back for more
Last year I made the final ten
Of the Readers’ Choice Award, I’m back again

Got a feeling that I’m swimming upstream
But I think that it’s worth another try
If I quit I’m sure I’ll regret it
What if …?

You heard me singing Pretty in Pink
Live on stage with my own lyrics
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?
Readers’ Choice, vote for me
Help me in my quest for victory
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?

I blog, I podcast and I sing
Thoughts on Brexit and tips on this blogging thing
Write birthday letters to the kids
My parody songs done at home
I make them all up on my own

Got a feeling that I’m swimming upstream
But I think that it’s worth another try
If I quit I’m sure I’ll regret it
What if …?

You heard me singing Pretty in Pink
Live on stage with my own lyrics
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?
Readers’ Choice, vote for me
Help me in my quest for victory
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?

This is all I ask
Moment’s glory in which to bask
This is all I ask
A momentous task

This is all I ask
Moment’s glory in which to bask
This is all I ask
A momentous task

This is all I ask
Moment’s glory in which to bask
This is all I ask
A momentous task

This is all I ask
Moment’s glory in which to bask
Glory in which to bask

You heard me singing Pretty in Pink
Live on stage with my own lyrics
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?
Readers’ Choice, vote for me
Help me in my quest for victory
And if you’ll give me a second thought
Can I have your support?

Give me a second thought
Can I have your support?

Give me a second thought
Can I have your support?

And here is the original Shawn Mendes track.
