Make It Stop: A dads’ night out musical parody

Shake It Off will never sound the same again.

We listen to a lot of Taylor Swift in our household. All three kids regularly wander around the house singing random tracks from her Red and 1989 albums and no car trip is complete without a three-part (dis)harmony from the back seats.

So I guess it was inevitable that I would eventually turn my parody-writing attention in that direction. And if you’re going to parody Taylor Swift, you just have to go for it and take on Shake It Off, right?

Anyhow, as a dad of three it’s fair to say I don’t get out as much as I used to (not that I was ever much of a party animal). Although there is a Friday night curry with some fellow local dads which has become a semi-regular fixture on my calendar. Not that I’m saying all dads’ nights outs end like this but, well, you know.

So here’s an ode to all those nights out when you’ve had one (or five) too many and the kids considerately decide to jump up and down on you at six o’clock the following morning …

Make It Stop (to the tune of Shake It Off)

I stayed out too late
Now I’ve got a migraine
Must be what I ate, mmm-mmm
Must be what I ate, mmm-mmm

I drank way too much red wine
I said that I’d be fine
Well, it made sense at the time, mmm-mmm
Made sense at the time, mmm-mmm

But I kept drinking
God, what was I thinking?
It’s like I got this devil
In my mind
Saying, “It’s gonna be alright”

So I went to bed too late, late, late, late, late
Now the kids just want to play, play, play, play, play
Baby, I just wanna make, make, make, make, make
Make it stop, make it stop
I think I might be sick, sick, sick, sick, sick
Pass me a bucket quick, quick, quick, quick, quick
Baby, I just wanna make, make, make, make, make
Make it stop, make it stop

Need paracetamol
My brain feels oh so dull
That last beer wasn’t wise, mmm-mmm
Last beer wasn’t wise, mmm-mmm

I stumbled home at four
And slept three hours on the floor
Oh what a fool I am, mmm-mmm
What a fool I am, mmm-mmm

But I kept drinking
God, what was I thinking?
It’s like I got this devil
In my mind
Saying, “It’s gonna be alright”

So I went to bed too late, late, late, late, late
Now the kids just want to play, play, play, play, play
Baby, I just wanna make, make, make, make, make
Make it stop, make it stop
I think I might be sick, sick, sick, sick, sick
Pass me a bucket quick, quick, quick, quick, quick
Baby, I just wanna make, make, make, make, make
Make it stop, make it stop
Make it stop, make it stop

Please, please, please, make it stop, make it stop
Please, please, please, make it stop, make it stop
Please, please, please, make it stop, make it stop

Just think while you’ve been getting out and about on the town with the lairy, lairy drunks of the world
You could’ve been home in bed and fast asleep

My mate Dan said he had a plan
We’ll eat rib-eye steak washed down with Pinot noir
Then a kebab from a van owned by a Turkish man
And we’ll call an Uber maybe, we can share, share, share

So I went to bed too late, late, late, late, late
Now the kids just want to play, play, play, play, play
Baby, I just wanna make, make, make, make, make
Make it stop, make it stop
I think I might be sick, sick, sick, sick, sick
Pass me a bucket quick, quick, quick, quick, quick
Baby, I just wanna make, make, make, make, make
Make it stop, make it stop

Make it stop, make it stop
Make it stop, make it stop
Make it stop, make it stop
Make it stop, make it stop

Make it stop, make it stop
Make it stop, make it stop
Make it stop, make it stop
Make it stop, make it stop

And here is Taylor Swift’s original. Just be glad I didn’t attempt any of the dance moves.
