My Sunday Photo: And for my next trick …

Honestly, I don’t know where Kara gets her confidence and poise from.

Both Heather and I are reserved by nature. I often joke that, when it comes to anything that requires me to perform in front of people, I have a face for radio and a voice for silent movies. I’m overweight (I’m what you might charitably term ‘cuddly’), almost pathologically shy (‘I need to work on my interpersonal skills’) and develop a stammer when I’m nervous that I’m acutely aware of (which, of course, only makes it worse once it’s started).

Kara, however, speaks her mind like Katie Hopkins and would make Kim Kardashian look shy and retiring.

Maybe it’s something about having a name that starts with a K?

She would make a great circus ringmaster (ringmistress?) Or a town crier. Or, as it turns out, a magician.

It’s not just that she has the desire and the confidence to grab Isaac’s magic set and perform simple tricks. It’s the way she automatically does everything with an extravagant flourish, an exuberant “ta-dah!” and a winning Cheshire cat grin.

At 4½, this is not a girl who sits quietly in the back of a room being just another face in the crowd. I hope she’s just the same when she’s 44½.
