My Sunday Photo: Joining the book club

Over the past couple of weeks, bedtime stories have taken on a new dimension as Kara has started to read for herself.

Both her older brothers are avid and fluent readers, so it was only a matter of time before Kara followed in their footsteps. And knowing what our daughter is like – the proverbial ‘girl in a hurry’ – it came as no surprise that the moment arrived sooner rather than later.

What’s most pleasing is the obvious delight she takes in reading the words in her starter books out loud for us. Sure, there’s an element of her having memorised each page through repetition but that’s how we all learned reading and writing in the first place, isn’t it?

This comes off the back of a first half-term and parents’ evening where she has settled in quickly and already shown excellent academic progress despite being relatively young in her school year (she was a May baby).

I know there’s a danger of slipping in to the trap of proudparentitis but I’m so pleased and proud she is happy and doing well. I think in the back of our minds there has always been a little guilt or worry that our third child has received only a fraction of the attention and academic focus that Isaac and to a lesser extent Toby had. So to see her doing well – and enjoying it – is a sign that we must have at least done something right. At the end of a long day at work, there are few things more enjoyable than curling up with Kara and a book – doubly so if she is now occasionally the one who is doing the reading.
