Strictly Come Thatcham

Have I mentioned how much our kids have become engrossed in Strictly Come Dancing this year? Maybe a little more than once or twice?

I’m a big fan of ‘candid’ photos – unposed, natural images that capture a particular moment in time or an emotional reaction. While I’m also a bit of a technical geek who likes to get things right when it comes to taking a clean, precise, well composed shot, I know that sometimes it just isn’t possible when an unexpected opportunity arises.

It was Christmas Eve, my folks had just arrived for the festivities and Kara decided she wanted Grandpa to dance with her to Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday. And so this moment occurred.

I whipped out my iPhone and managed to quickly grab the shot you can see above. From a technical perspective, it’s blurry and a bit cluttered but do you know what? From an emotional perspective, I think it’s just perfect. A girl completely at ease with a willing grandfather, losing herself in a whirlwind of dance and 1970s glam rock.

And when she makes her debut as a professional on series 33 of Strictly Come Dancing, I’ll look back on this photo and see not the technical flaws but the memory of where it all began. That’s all that really matters.
