This week I’m delighted to welcome to the podcast Julian aka Northern Dad, the winner of Best Writer at the BritMums Brilliance in Blogging awards in June.
Julian reads his post From smashing pottery to group sex to devil worship in 2 minutes, but that’s pre-teens for you, a whirlwind tour through a day in the life of parenting a 12-year-old son. For those of us with children who have yet to hit this age, it’s an amusing but terrifying insight into what is to come. God help us.

After last week’s X Factor-esque effort with Thatcham Rhapsody, you’ll be relieved to hear that I’m returning to normal this week by reading rather than singing my chosen post.
Like Julian, I’ve already had my share of awkward conversations with my kids – although I’ve yet to tick either the group sex or devil worship boxes as he has – and one of the most striking was one I had with Isaac a few years back shortly before his fourth birthday, when we had an in-depth discussion about what death means. Once you’ve had a conversation like that, exposing a child to the cruel realities of the world, there is no going back as I discovered in The end of the innocence.
