We have just come back from the French Alps, where we spent the week enjoying the company of good friends, great food and stunning views.

Of all the great images I captured over the course of the week, this one from the restaurant we stopped in at the top of the Col des Aravis is my favourite. Mont Blanc is the best part of 40km away as the crow flies but nonetheless dominates the landscape, its upper slopes still snowy white despite the 30°C-plus temperatures in the valleys below.

At 4,810 metres, it’s the highest peak in Western Europe and at least double the altitude of virtually every climb tackled in the Tour de France – the Col des Aravis itself is no insignificant mountain, but is less than one-third of Mont Blanc’s height.

All facts and statistics aside, it’s a spectacular sight to behold and one that we were able to enjoy from our lunch table on a relatively clear day that allowed us to see the peak from behind the occasional cloud. It’s an image I won’t quickly forget.
