My Sunday Photo: His father’s son

Children have a tendency to follow in their parents’ footsteps. Sometimes it’s nature. Sometimes it’s nurture. And sometimes it’s a bit of both.

Boys will be boys. I’ve always liked my fast cars, having at various stages in my life owned a Peugeot 306 GTi-6, an Audi TT and now a BMW 428i.

Isaac and Toby have followed in my footsteps. Both of them have been experts in identifying the make and model of cars from a very early age. While it wouldn’t be entirely true to say that Isaac’s first word was ‘Ford’, it might as well have been. Certainly by the time he was 2½, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Skoda and Renault had found their way into his vocabulary.

The boys’ favourite TV programme is, of course, Top Gear. They like nothing better than to pore over glossy brochures that they’ve picked up from car dealerships. And Isaac has recently taken to perusing my copies of What Car?

Still, it could be worse. If the boys ever develop my penchant for retail therapy, then we’ll be in big trouble …
