Something for the weekend: Bravery comes in many forms

Bravery comes in many forms. There is physical bravery. There is moral courage. And sometimes bravery is about admitting you are flawed or making a lifestyle choice.

This week I’ve selected two posts that show different aspects of personal courage. Now what am I going to do that’s even half as brave as this?

My Secret Battle With Depression – Dad Creek Without a Paddle

I had the pleasure of finally meeting Ryan (and his luxuriantly fulsome beard) at BritMums Live last month. He’s a quiet but charming and instantly likeable chap.

But, as the saying goes, still waters run deep. Having spent two days with him, I had no inkling that less than two weeks later he would be opening up about his ongoing battle with his inner demons in My Secret Battle With Depression.

He claims to be not much of a writer or a communicator. I beg to differ.

In telling his story with unflinching honesty, Ryan sends a message which is both important and also incredibly brave. I know he wasn’t sure whether to hit ‘publish’ on this post beforehand. But he did – and you absolutely must read it.

You can follow Ryan on his blog Dad Creek Without a Paddle and on Twitter @costyy2k.

Are You Prepared to Compromise? – Single Mother Ahoy!

Single mum of one Vicky is one of a number of inspiring people who are living the life many of the rest of us daydream about, as a self-employed blogger.

As she discusses in Are You Prepared to Compromise?, she may be earning less than she was in her former job (for now, at least) but she has more control and flexibility, she’s doing what she loves and she’s consequently happier for it.

It’s a brave step to take for anyone but particularly when you don’t have the safety net of another income to rely on. But Vicky (and others like her) are proof positive that it is possible to follow a passion and blog for a living.

You can follow Vicky on her blog Single Mother Ahoy! and on Twitter @SingleMAhoy.

If you have any suggestions for great posts by other bloggers you’ve read this week, feel free to add them in the comments below.
