Book review & competition: I Love You Daddy Grizzle

A book review and a chance to win yourself a copy for Father’s Day? You lucky lot!

As an avid reader myself, I’m delighted that all three of our children have inherited a love of books. One of the joys of fatherhood for me is the simple pleasure of reading bedtime stories to kids who hang on to every word of their favourite books.

I love you Daddy GrizzleSo when the folks at Puffin Books asked me to review one of their latest children’s books, I Love You Daddy Grizzle, as part of their Father’s Day campaign to encourage more dads to read, I was more than happy to participate with a topic close to my heart.

Written by Mark Sperring and illustrated by Sebastien Braun, I Love You Daddy Grizzle features the characters Daddy Grizzle and Little Pip from How Many Sleeps till My Birthday and How Many Sleeps till Christmas.

It’s a heart-warming story celebrating the relationship between father and son, with a simple but important message about the real meaning of Father’s Day.

The kids – Isaac (age seven), Toby (five) and Kara (three) – and I read this together earlier this week, and each of them was entranced by it in their own way. Kara smiled and giggled her way through it, while both boys grasped the deeper meaning of the story and declared Braun’s illustrations to be particularly attractive.

Not many stories appeal to all three of our children but this worked on enough levels to keep each of them interested – a sure-fire sign of a good book. Thoroughly recommended!

I Love You Daddy Grizzle is published by Puffin in paperback format. You can find out more about it on the Penguin website here.
