Music has always been a big part of my life – and it plays a significant role in my children’s lives too. This new feature celebrates those little three-minute bursts of sound that bring a smile to all our faces.

Despite my best efforts, the kids definitely favour modern music over what I would term the ‘classics’ – that’s primarily the mid-to-late 1980s for me. They have an innate filter based on how old any given song is: 2010 onwards is acceptable, anything earlier is regarded as ancient history and therefore irrelevant. Yes, even the finest works of Stock, Aitken and Waterman is off-limits.

However, one song that has passed the Old Fogey Detector Test is Ray Parker Jr’s Ghostbusters, from the 1984 film of the same name starring Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver. It’s a track with a thumping beat and a colourful video featuring cameos from a variety of stars including Chevy Chase, John Candy, Cheers’ George Wendt, Danny DeVito, Carly Simon and Columbo‘s Peter Falk. It hooked Kara first and has gradually drawn the boys in too. Ask her who she’s going to call and you will receive the emphatic response, “Ghostbusters!”

The film is now being remade with an all-female leading cast of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. They could do a lot worse than reuse the original theme song.
