Thanks! This shot was one of only two in a whole series that really worked. Other than boosting the colour contrast a touch it’s a natural shot – taken with my iPhone in low light, so a slow shutter speed which on this occasion captured the motion trail of the glow sticks perfectly. I love the fact you can see Toby’s face behind it too.

I was really pleased with this. Toby was dancing around the room with four glow-stick bracelets on his wrist. Add in a naturally slow shutter speed because of the dark room and bingo!

No trickery or even skill involved! Just a willing subject and some perseverance on my part to keep trying until I got the right shot. The low light forces a slower shutter speed, which creates a motion trail from the glow sticks on Toby’s wrist which create the blurry light effect without me having to do much else.

how cool! You say no skill involved but I’d somehow still manage to mess it up and just have blur!
Hope you all had a great Christmas 🙂

Thanks Michaela, we did – hope you did too. As for the shot, it was as much a case of persistence as anything – I took about a dozen shots and this was one of only two that worked.

Just glow-sticks. I bought the kids a big box of them for Christmas. They’ve always liked to have their own little dance parties in the dark, so these were intended to allow them to accessorise. (And to give me the opportunity to get some good photos …)

I have to admit I do love this shot and it turned out even better than I had been hoping for. I wanted to achieve some motion blur – the fact that I caught Toby in the act of waving his hand in front of his own face was pure serendipity.

Great shot, and a good memory of their play on that occasion. Don’t often get the chance for such a photo.
