Regular readers may recall that I’ve written previously about Isaac’s keen ear for music (of which I am very proud) and also his liking for ballet (which I am somewhat more ambivalent about). Thankfully his ballet phase seems to have now vanished into the mists of time, but his interest in dancing has certainly grown recently, coinciding with him moving up to pre-school.

In fact, over the past couple of weeks he has taken great delight in showing off the latest moves he has learnt. These have ranged from the basics such as ‘walking up the hill’ and the hands-on-hips-wiggle, to the more advanced ‘banana skate’ (sliding from side to side). Increasingly, these are now being coordinated with a variety of hand motions to produce something that wouldn’t look out of place on Strictly Come Dancing. If it was being performed by Ann Widdecombe.

I’m only joking. While I’m not convinced Zac’s ever going to be the next Mikhail Baryshnikov, he certainly moves a lot better than his old man, who was born with the two left feet of an arthritic elephant. And has the equivalent of two left arms to match.

Seriously, if you have ever had the dubious pleasure of seeing me dance at a wedding or a Christmas party you will know that (a) I only dance when I’m drunk and (b) even if I was stone-cold sober, I always look like I’m drunk when I’m dancing anyway. You would also have my commiserations, and I know the phone number of a good post-traumatic stress disorder counsellor if you need one. I’m that bad. I wish I wasn’t, but I am.

So it is a relief really to see that Zac already has more natural – or, at the very least, less unnatural – rhythm than his dad. And I also like that he is so happy and unself-conscious when he is dancing. To see him combine that with his love of music is just a joy to behold, as these two videos of him dancing along to The Black Eyed PeasI’ve Gotta Feeling demonstrate:

Seeing his infectious enthusiasm as he dances is almost enough to make me want to get up and join him. But not quite.
